The Vision of Saint Francis
By Sir Edward Burne-Jones
The Vision of Saint Francis watercolor fine art print has an incredible origin story. The original painting was created as a gift for Father Damian (Saint Damian of Molokai) from Sir Edward Burne-Jones when he learned that one of his former studio assistants would be traveling to Hawaii for research on leprosy. The painting was given to Father Damian only four months before his death after contracting leprosy himself in service to others who had contracted the disease.
After his death, Father Damian's caretaker, Sister Marianne Cope, hung the watercolor painting in the Mission's leper's chapel during her life and there it remained until it was later moved to Syracuse, New York after her death. After many years, the Sisters of Saint Francis shared this storied artwork with the world to contemplate and enjoy.
